  • What are the best ways to introduce books to your kids?

Hi fam! I’m a working mother and have had to give screen time to my children. Last one year I’ve tried to reduce screen time to a lot (like to 15 minutes a day, and that too not everyday).

One thing I tried is creating a space where I could just keep toys and children’s books in the open for them to explore. For the first two months it hardly worked, but with 0 TV/phone time they started picking up these toys and books to while their time away. Storytelling has given me great joy, and I can see that the kids too are excited when they’re around illustrated books or comics nowadays.

Personally I love Oliver Jeffers books and Oi Frog series. I make my own simplified story with the illustrations in our vernacular language so that the kids understand.

How have you introduced books to your kids? And what kind of books do they like? If you’ve got some great reccos, please share.

Reading books during bed time is how I introduced books to the kids. They're hooked to picture books now and love visiting libraries as much as I do!

The best way is to read the books to them. I think story books with big, colorful pictures gets kids interested in the books.

Loved reading this, Ankita! I’m not a parent yet, but I’ve been the “book gifter uncle” to my nieces and nephews 😄

What’s worked really well is making books part of playtime — like mixing in a short story with building blocks or acting it out with their toys. One trick that surprisingly works: letting them chew on board books as toddlers 😂 (Turns out, curiosity starts there too.)

For early readers, Peppa Pig phonics box set and Usborne’s lift-the-flap books have been a hit in our family. And yes, Oliver Jeffers is GOLD. Also recommend The Tiger Who Came to Tea and Gajapati Kulapati — both are absolute delights!

Would love to hear more about how you bring vernacular storytelling into the mix. Sounds amazing!
