Project Asmita: Center to produce 22000+ books in Indian Vernacular Languages
The Union Ministry of Education and the University Grants Commission (UGC) announced the groundbreaking project ASMITA aimed at creating 22,000 books in Indian languages, a significant step towards promoting linguistic diversity and accessibility in education. Union Minister for Education and Skill Development Dharmendra Pradhan unveiled this ambitious initiative, which will focus on producing textbooks and supplementary reading materials for school students. This project is part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes the importance of mother tongue and regional languages in early education. By providing educational resources in various Indian languages, the government aims to enhance the learning experience for students and ensure that linguistic diversity is preserved and celebrated.Pradhan highlighted that this initiative will bridge the gap in educational resources available in regional languages, making learning more inclusive and effective. The project will involve collaboration with various state governments and educational institutions to identify and translate key educational materials. The Centre's plan also includes setting up language labs and resource centers across the country to support the development and dissemination of these books. These centers will serve as hubs for linguistic research and innovation, fostering a culture of multilingualism in education. In addition to textbooks, the project will cover a wide range of subjects, including science, mathematics, social studies, and literature. This comprehensive approach aims to provide students with a holistic education that respects and incorporates their linguistic heritage. This initiative is expected to significantly impact the educational landscape in India, empowering students to learn in their mother tongue and fostering a deeper connection to their cultural roots. The project aligns with the broader goals of the NEP 2020, which seeks to transform the education system and make it more equitable, inclusive, and rooted in Indian values and traditions.By producing 22,000 books in Indian languages, the Centre is taking a decisive step towards realizing the vision of an education system that respects and promotes linguistic diversity, ensuring that every student has access to quality education in their language.

Hi Booksom, I'm Aruna!
Hello Booksom community,I’m Aruna from Delhi, and I love to read. Found books to be the best of friends ever since I was in school and have been reading ever since. I have a penchant for joining book clubs and communities both physical and online. Hope to have great discussions with you in coming days.My favourite books include Fredrick Backman’s Anxious People, R.J. Palacio’s Wonder and Chitra Divakaruni’s The Palace of Illusions. It’s a long long list tbh, but these are the books I love the most.
What are the best ways to introduce books to your kids?
Hi fam! I’m a working mother and have had to give screen time to my children. Last one year I’ve tried to reduce screen time to a lot (like to 15 minutes a day, and that too not everyday). One thing I tried is creating a space where I could just keep toys and children’s books in the open for them to explore. For the first two months it hardly worked, but with 0 TV/phone time they started picking up these toys and books to while their time away. Storytelling has given me great joy, and I can see that the kids too are excited when they’re around illustrated books or comics nowadays.Personally I love Oliver Jeffers books and Oi Frog series. I make my own simplified story with the illustrations in our vernacular language so that the kids understand. How have you introduced books to your kids? And what kind of books do they like? If you’ve got some great reccos, please share.
